The "no excuses" guide to getting back on track

Guide to getting back on track

Starting to find excuses for why you can't exercise? Here are your counter-attacks for the most common exercise avoidance strategies.

"I don't have time today."

Here are some tips to find time in your day. Look for a way (any way!) to do it today.

  • Getting up a little earlier in the morning works for some busy people by making time for activity before the day gets out of hand.
  • If an hour-long workout (plus prep and change time) is too much, look for ways to squeeze in 10 minute stints throughout the day: for example, by carrying groceries home, taking the stairs instead of the elevator or doing one segment on your workout DVD.
  • Multitask by combining activities: sit-ups and TV, stationary bike and reading, doing leg lifts while on the phone.

"I'm too tired."

Everyone has energy peaks and valleys, but if "too tired to exercise" has become your mantra, we will help you change that with these simple tips.

  • Figure out the time when you are most energized, and plan to exercise then.
  • Ease into exercise, with some deep breathing and easy stretches to wake up your body.
  • Try activities that boost energy, such as yoga, pilates or walking at a moderate pace.

"Exercise is boring."

Try to step outside of your notions of what exercise is all about.

  • Join a gym with giant TV screens or change your play list often.
  • Exercise with a good friend and use the time to catch up.
  • Try something new to stimulate your mind as well as your body: a new sport or a new dance class, the possibilities are endless!

"I'm too hungry."

Plan your meal times around your exercise date, and stow snacks in your desk drawer or gym bag for an on-the-go energy boost. A few to try:

  • Hearty fruit such as an apple or banana and a small container of unsalted nuts.
  • Packaged soup (if you have access to a kettle) and whole grain crackers.
  • A snack bar (ideally one with whole grains!).

"It's too cold/wet/dark outside."

There's no denying the motivation-quashing power of a Canadian winter in full throttle. Fortunately, there are more options than ever.

  • Join a recreational facility close to home, work or en-route to minimize the northern exposure.
  • DVDs and gaming consoles can add new life to your winter home workouts.
  • Embrace the cold by investing in high-performance technical wear, which can make a surprising difference in making the elements enjoyable.
