Spring cleaning workout

With spring cleaning season upon us, there’s plenty of opportunity to get at part of your weekly recommended activity while still doing the household chores.

In fact, with just a little extra effort, spring cleaning can provide many of the same types of activities offered at fitness classes:

  • Stretches. Reaching on tiptoes to dust cobwebs; cleaning bookcases and upper cabinets; pruning high branches; detailing the car.
  • Squats. Lifting heavy boxes; pouring a heavy bag of mulch or fertilizer; weeding the garden.
  • Lunges. Can be incorporated into vacuuming, mopping and wiping baseboards.
  • Upper body conditioning. Cleaning windows, walls and shower stalls; pruning; beating area rugs.
  • Cardio. Mopping floors (if done quickly); cutting the lawn with a manual mower; carrying items up stairs; hauling garbage.
